兩萬顆磁磚，沒有人一顆一顆挑過

這座吧檯，沒有一塊是平的
馬賽克是一張一張平的網片，平的牆、直的柱，貼上去就好；綠色的磁磚是現成的，顏色也挑得到。這座吧檯，沒有一塊是平的。
攤平，一定會失真
平的網片要包上曲面，得先把曲面攤平，攤平一定會失真；磁磚又是有厚度的方塊，彎的地方，外緣要走的路比背面長。我們把整座量了一遍，真正貼磚的那 7.8 平方米裡，有 41% 的地方縫收不掉，最嚴重的那一張網片，要少掉九顆。硬貼上去，歪掉的不只是磚，是那張畫。
這是我們把曲面攤開的時候，自己算出來的。
畫在攤平的樣板上
所以先把曲面攤成樣板，畫家直接畫在攤平的樣板上；再把那張畫壓成四個色號，讓電腦決定每一顆磚放哪一個顏色。工廠照著樣板先貼成一張一張，送到現場只要對號，彎得最兇的那幾塊再修。
怎麼切、怎麼對位，這題我們留著。一百年前，這種東西只能靠工班一顆一顆撿、憑眼睛配色。Cava Baja Spanish Restaurant 這座是兩萬顆磁磚、一百張網片、四個色號；影片裡的熱圖和樣板，是從它的模型量出來的，網點是從畫家那張手稿壓出來的。

餐廳吧檯、曲面量體要包馬賽克，帶店的想法和場地來，我們先一起算。
There is a painting on this bar, made of twenty thousand tiles, and no one picked them one by one. Mosaic comes in flat sheets, which is fine for flat walls and straight columns, but not one part of this bar is flat. To wrap a flat sheet over a curved surface you have to unfold the surface, and unfolding always distorts; tiles are blocks with thickness, so on a curve the outer edge travels further than the back. We measured the whole bar: across 7.8 square metres of tiling, 41% of the joints could not be closed, and the worst sheet would have been nine tiles short. So the surface was unfolded into templates, the artist painted directly on them, and the painting was reduced to four colours, with the computer deciding each tile's colour. The factory pre-laid each sheet to its template; on site they only had to be matched by number, with the tightest curves trimmed by hand. How it is cut and aligned, we keep to ourselves.
