The shape of a counter decides how people sit at it.
This home has no dining table. A straight bar would seat four people in a row, each looking their own way — present together, but not on the same thing. That is not a furniture problem; it is a shape problem, because a straight line offers only one way to sit. So both ends of the counter are cut back on a diagonal and the middle carries a curve: the diagonals turn people inward, the curve catches them at the centre, and four people gather around one table instead of occupying four seats. The counter is no larger — what opens up is the middle. Where the dining table had stood, a steel shelving unit and a single chair took over.
